Vietnam: Day 1 - Survived Crossing the Street

Things we did today

1. Had the fastest service with amazing food at Quan an Ngon.  Fabulous pho for breakfast.

Of note was the following.  We had a great deal of enjoyment discussing what might be in these Vegetable Dumplings if not vegetables?!

What was really neat about this restaurant was that the tables were surrounded by many small "kitchens" that made the different menu items.  Each area had an specialty.

2. Survived crossing the street.  We learned to walk with purpose and to not look at the cars and motor bikes barreling towards us.  (This picture does not do justice to Hanoi traffic.)

3. Were successfully hoodwinked by two pineapple sellers.  These pictures cost us $2 to get rid of the women - and their pineapples (even though we would have enjoyed the fruit, but we are avoiding street food no matter how good it looks!)

4. Saw many interesting sites during our walk through the old city.

5. Went the touristy route to see the Thang Long Water Puppets.  And got suckered by paying $1 to take these pictures!!!  Apologies on the photos.  It was dark and I couldn't use a flash.  The puppets are probably a foot high to give some perspective.  Very interesting music and stories behind the puppets.  We enjoyed it!

Wonderful day, but the heat (over 80 and high humidity) finally got to us so we headed back to the hotel for a nap, dinner and bed.

Arrived in Hanoi!

Just arrived in Hanoi after a LONG day of travel.  13 hours to Tokyo and then 6 to Hanoi.  It is only 89 degrees at 10pm.  Imagine what tomorrow holds!  Sleep first.

Graduation for One, Trip for All

This year our family decided on a trip to Asia to celebrate Maddy's college graduation and our 25th anniversary.  We would have loved to have spent time in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, but as I learned the geography (and I'm severely lacking in this area) it became clear that to do these countries justice we'd have to visit the area twice.

So, this trip will focus on Vietnam and Thailand.  We'll be sampling along the way with visits to Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City in the north, middle and southern areas of Vietnam.  We'll have side trips along the way and then we move to Chiang Mai and Bangkok in Thailand.

Along the way, we will all add to this blog with pictures, words, thoughts and whatever strikes our fancy.  Of course, we'll attempt to post daily, but who knows.

Looking forward to sharing our fun with everyone.
